The Rhone wine-making area covers approx. 73,468 hectares of vines. It is an area that makes principally red wines from the syrah, grenache, mourvedre, cinsault, and carignan vines. Its whites are made from the viognier, roussanne, marsanne, grenache blanc, clairette and bourboulenc grapes. Totally around 2,830,000 hectolitres are produced annually, making it the second biggest producing region in France after Bordeaux.
